ABOUT THE ANNAPOLIS HERITAGE SOCIETY
The Annapolis Heritage Society (AHS) is an incorporated, non-profit society that owns and operates the O’Dell House Museum, Archives & Research Centre as well as the Sinclair Inn, both located in Annapolis Royal. AHS also manages the provincially owned North Hills Museum in Granville Ferry. Established in 1974, AHS aims to preserve, celebrate and provide public access to the history of Annapolis and surrounding areas. It houses a large collection of artifacts, archival materials and research resources and provides regular public programming including visitor tours, exhibitions, events and genealogical services.

POSITION SUMMARY
Following AHS policy and reporting to the Executive Director, the Museum and Archives Curator is responsible for the management of the AHS collections; exhibitions and other public programming; and training of seasonal staff and volunteers.

PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Museum Collection

  • acquisition of additions to the collection
  • collection documentation and the maintenance of collection records
  • care of the collection including items in storage and on permanent display
  • Research that expands the knowledge of the collection

Exhibitions and Public Programming

  • Directs the research, planning and implementation of annual live exhibits at the O’Dell
  • Directs the research, planning and implementation of collection-related onsite events at the O’Dell
  • Plans and implements AHS’s online features or mini-exhibits
  • Provides support to the seasonal site managers at the Sinclair Inn and North Hills Museum particularly for live and online exhibits as well as onsite events

Staff and Volunteers

  • Determines seasonal projects for student jobs and volunteer positions
  • Creates and/or updates job descriptions  for student positions—Interpreters, Curatorial Assistants and Archival Assistants—and volunteers
  • Participates in the interview process for hiring of seasonal staff
  • Directs the training, supervision and evaluation of student staff and volunteers

ESSENTIAL SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS

  • A museum-based diploma or degree, or a degree in a relevant field (for example: history, or information/library science)
  • Work experience in museums as employee or contractor; candidates having additional  work experience with archives or experience with MemoryNS and CollectiveAccess databases will be given preferential consideration
  • A strong sense of leadership, ethics and diplomacy
  • Excellent oral and written communication and presentation skills
  • Attention to detail
  • Ability to work both independently and as a team player
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office, and ability to adapt to new technological tools
  • Working knowledge of social media platforms
  • Legal eligibility for employment in Canada
  • Possession of a valid driver’s license from a Canadian province or territory
  • Ability to work flexible hours if needed
  • Sense of humour

SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE ASSETS

  • Knowledge of: the history of Nova Scotia; the town of Annapolis Royal and surrounding area; social history of Nova Scotia; antiques
  • Photography, scanning and image-editing skills
  • French language skills

PLACE OF WORK

  • Primarily at the O’Dell Museum, Archives and Research Centre, 136 George Street, Annapolis Royal; occasionally at the Sinclair Inn in Annapolis Royal and North Hills Museum, Granville Ferry
